FOOTBALL: Sunday Oliseh goes on rant: Reveals Near-Death Experience, blasts Amaju Pinnick, Mikel Obi and Vincent Enyeama

The former Super Eagles captain and midfielder still feels angry at the way he left the coaching role of the Super Eagles in February and the negative perception Nigerian football lovers have of him and has now blasted the NFF president Amaju Pinnick , executive committee member Christopher Green and players like Mikel Obi and Vincent Enyeama.

In a long revealing article written on his website Sundayoliseh.tv and  titled “My Recent Near Death Experience As Coach Of Nigeria,' the FIFA technical committee member said his mind in it's entirety. Very revealing! Read more after the cut.

“One day whilst coaching the super Eagles in Abuja stadium prior to the Burkina Faso game I all of a sudden felt dizziness, light headedness, headache and could barely stand,” Oliseh narrated. “I managed to finish the session before calling on the doctor into my room who was clueless to what was happening.
“From then on it was sleepless nights, loss of appetite, high blood pressure and before I knew it I started losing weight.
“After several visits to doctors abroad nothing was found though the doctors found anomalies they couldn’t pin point the actual illness to.

“Prior to the away trip to Burkina Faso for the final CHAN qualifier game in Port Harcourt after lunch I was struck with the worst feat of this illness again. Could not walk, talk, dizzy and felt like I was going to pass out.
“I quickly demanded to be rushed to the airport and with the evening flight travelled to Germany to see specialists .After 2 days of nonstop tests I was diagnosed to have narrowly escaped a total collapse in Nigeria.

“For weeks I was bed ridden, lost 7 kilos and could barely walk 5 metres without sitting down. My family was petrified and all feared the worst. One thing was for sure though: had I not taking that evening flight to Germany when I did, there was a strong possibility of a far worse outcome. Thank God for his mercies.
“All through the last 4 months of my tenure as coach I was far from my complete healthy self and coached the team and stayed in my bedroom. Often on my bed or sofa.

“Imagine how betrayed and pained I must have felt with the lack of support at these life threatening times from my employers the NFF and the shady pressmen who made it a duty not to report the gravity of the illnesses that befell me and my assistant to the Nigerian people and kind of like wished us the worst!
“On the day I put in my resignation letter I was still far from my best health wise and I guess it is better staying alive than getting embroiled with these people who have no interest of Nigeria at heart.”

Oliseh added: “A day after the Late Stephen Keshi was relieved of his duties as coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, I got a phone call from the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) offering me the job which I immediately rejected. The call lasted just 2 minutes!
“I was to further refuse the offer twice again in the next 2 days that followed as they kept on calling. Their argument: With the new president Muhammadu Buhari in place, the Nff was ready for a change and was abandoning their old ‘Shady’ ways!

“It took the intervention of a phone call from a highly ranked federal government official for me to budge. His point was simple “your country is in dire need of your services and the NFF promised me a change, put your terms in writing and if they do not accept it, let them go elsewhere”.
“Which is what I did and we all eventually signed a working agreement. Thus began the adventure to coach the Super Eagles of Nigeria. Sometimes I wish I stood my grounds and refused their offer, but I guess the urge to help my country was just too much to ignore.”

Oliseh, then narrated how he and players Enyeama, Mikel and Victor Moses got off on the wrong foot and how Mikel snubbed his messages.
He wrote: “My first official act was to call the team Captain Vincent Enyeama (Lille OSC, France) to rub minds and fix an appointment to see him. Same act was accorded to John Obi Mikel and Victor Moses of Chelsea. All except for Obi Mikel picked up my call and Mikel even ignored my eventual sms.

“Spent a lovely day at Lille with Enyeama, took him to lunch and shared my Philosophy with him and he seemed genuinely inspired to work together but kept on talking about pending retirement which we agreed he would shelve aside till after AFCON 2017 at least.

“Went to London to see Mikel & Moses but could only see Moses as Mikel did not reply my calls & we could not get a hold of him.
“Moses came 2 ½ half hours late to our meeting but none the less we had a productive talk in company of my assistant, Jean Francois Losciuto.
“Three weeks to my first official game in charge of the Super Eagles, vs Tanzania, and the invitations were sent out to the clubs, 2 weeks to the game Victor Moses opted out citing fear of contracting an injury whilst playing for Nigeria in favour of his club via a written letter to the Team manager of the super eagles.

“Most players reported to camp on Monday prior to the Tanzania game, Vincent Enyeama was supposed to fly in Tuesday Morning, only for me to be surprisingly informed via sms that he was skipping the game because he lost the mum some weeks earlier.
“I called him up and made an agreement with him, as I needed not only my captain and such a good goalkeeper for my opening game, that if he came for the game on Friday I would release him to go to the village after the game and skip the friendly game versus Niger scheduled for 3 days later after the Tanzania encounter, which he agreed.

“The team was scheduled to fly out on Thursday. On Wednesday afternoon Enyeama called to say he was not coming for the game, definitively.
“I was shocked as we had an agreement, we needed his experience, leadership and I was aware he was yet to miss a training session for his club side talk less of a league game.

“As faith will have it, with a brand new team that trained only for two days we were able to come out of the Tanzania game with a point and my newly discovered and talented goalkeeper, Carl Ikeme of Wolverhampton was the man of the match. A 2-0 resounding victory over Niger 3 days later gave a successful look to the first camping but cast questions on if we could count on the three above named players to help us proceed. I chose to build alternatives!”

“On the day I was unveiled, the very vocal president of the NFF, Amaju Pinnick boasted to the world that he was going to pay me 6 months’ salary in advance, we were never ever going to be owed as he had procured sponsorship from Zenith bank, that he knows I am the African Guardiola etc.
declarations that not only added unnecessary pressure on us but made us hated by certain quarters as ‘prima Donnas’. Far from smart at all!

“We now know that, that was a ploy to make the world falsely believe that I was giving all the tools to succeed whilst intending to eventually starve us of tools to succeed in reality to have a scape goat and employ his dream foreign coach for obvious reasons, as was tried failingly recently!
“This false claim was repeated often by the Nff and Mr Pinnick often in the following months whilst I was not only u paid but so were my assistants too.

“In October 2015, with the belief that I had millions from the Nff, kidnappers attacked a family member of mine’s home in Lagos, but thanks to God the intended victim was not at home.
“Shaken at the news, I called Mr Amaju to inform him of my displeasure of his false public declarations in my regard and there and then the seed of Resignation started to grow in me. Is this worth my peaceful family suffering?

“I signed my contract as Chief Coach Of the super Eagles in July 2015 and was paid in August for July and August but did no longer get any payments till January 2016.My assistants were worse off as they received just a month’s pay as at January 2016.The Nff and its allies in public claimed otherwise
“Whilst this was the case, president Pinnick still kept on telling the world I was pad in advance several months.

“All equipment’s I used to coach, even as down to simple cones and tactics boards, I had to buy them all myself as the super eagles had none available!
“In February 2016 I wrote an official demand letter to the Nff asking for payment of my owed wages otherwise I would act as the international law demands.
“The International law states that if after serving your employer as a coach a demand letter of payment and they refuse to pay, you are still entitled to the total sum of the remaining totality of your contract should you resign!

“As at today by my reckoning, I am still being owed wages and should it come up to CAS (The international Court of Arbitration of sports) the NFF will be forced to pay me the sum of the contractual remaining 28 months’ salary in addition to the owed wages. I leave you to calculate how much that is. In my place what would you do today?

“Super Eagles’ Assistant Coach Jean François Losciuto’s near death experience.
“After the first round of CHAN training preparations in Abuja Nigeria, the team landed Pretoria for the final stage of the CHAN preparations.

“Two days later my assistant coach Jean Francois Losciuto collapsed in the lobby of the hotel and was rushed to the hospital. The doctors refused to operate unless payment was paid in advance.
“The Nff had failed to inform the Embassy of Nigeria in South Africa of our presence hence we were all on our own and jean François was facing probable death.

“I therefore had to put up a deposit payment that allowed the hotel to admit and stabilize him before operation. Eventually he was operated on and what was dug out from his stomach was the scariest experience we ever saw till then. The metal was 4.8centimeters long!

“Had he not been timely operated on he would have died and how that 4.8 centimeters piece of metal got into his stomach was a mystery to the doctors and still is to us till date, but the most painful part of it was barely was this made public knowledge to our country we were serving by our so called sports editors.
“Imagine near death and the people you serve are not intentionally well informed by the press? Scary no?”

The former Coach also talked more on his  clashes with the NFF technical committee.
Oliseh wrote:
“In my entire 23 years of involvement with the Super Eagles, never has the working conditions and player welfare been as bad as it was when I was in charge. The team stood out like beggars!
“For a team like the legendary super eagles, our players were not furnished with as little as bathroom slippers from NIKE. The training equipment’s had to be bought from local stores in Aba and Lagos.
“Football shoes were not available and on the camp in South Africa during CHAN, I had to buy 2 football shoes for my players.
“Even the barest minimum like food was lacking. Feeding was unsuitable to put it lightly and had to pay for the feeding of the team. Little did I know that not only will I not be reimbursed, it would be contested by the Nff and I would be criticized for it?

“The Nigerian ambassador to South Africa was rightfully incensed as to why the Nff failed to notify him of the team’s arrival to south Africa and be left to fender in such a sorry state!
“I had organized via my South African friends the world standard performance centre in Pretoria for the super eagles and the on the only thing the Nff was left to do was the accommodation and transportation, and those were the areas we saw hell!

“The camping and tournament proper of CHAN lasted more or less 5 weeks, first stage in Nigeria, to South Africa (Pretoria) and then finally, Rwanda. All through this period not only were the coaches, players and staff unpaid and uncared for but we were completely abandoned. In a 2 star hotel, poor nutrition, room states and dangerous conditions.
“When as a coach I tried to enquire for a change we were instructed not to share this with the public as the Nff was cash strapped.

“That would have been acceptable if the whole federation were not at the same period on a paid holiday trip of over 60 officials for over a week to expensive London hotels whilst we barely had food to eat on a national mission 6,000 kilometres away from home.
“The training equipment’s were all lacking, 2 sets of jerseys and though Nff is sponsored by NIKE, the players barely had bathroom slippers to walk around in but also no football shoes.
“I had no choice seeing the sorry state of these poor boys but to arrange for feeding at my own expense and buy football shoes for some of the players whose shoes became damaged.

“The accommodating conditions chosen by the federation were worse in Rwanda and though we were leading the Group heading off to the Final group game versus Guinea, the boys awaited some form of aid financially from the Nff to ease up but all promises were never honoured.
“The disappointing Phone call from the Nff President Pinnick just hours to the game that he would be coming over with the player’s remunerations only when the team got to the finals broke down the morale of the boys and obviously we lost the game and faced elimination.

“Till date these boys are yet to be paid their owed allowances in full 6 months later.
“It should be noted that Nigeria was the only team at this tournament without leading federation members present. Only Mr Chris Green of the technical committee stayed behind but he lodged in a 500 dollars a night 5 star hotel and we barely ever saw him!

“Having played, captained and now coached the super Eagles I could read the Nff easily .The crisis that now exists today I saw it coming way back as in November 2015 when we camped and beat Swaziland to qualify into the world cup qualifiers group stage in port Harcourt.
“The moment Ayansi was replaced as head of the infamous technical committee by Mr Chris Green, we all knew that disaster and chaos was on the way.

“Chris Green is a man who late Stephen Keshi almost beat up just midway into the 2013 AFCON adventure in South Africa and eventually was going around all of Rwanda telling all who cared to listen that he won the 2013 AFCON for Nigeria and the 2014 world cup qualification and not Keshi.
“How? I leave you to guess as I don’t remember him ever scoring one goal or being a player or coach at these events.”

FOOTBALL: 'PINNICK MUST GO' PROTEST MARS INFANTINO'S NIGERIA VISIT

Ex-international Emeka Ezeogu led protest at the Transcorp Hotel asking for the resignation of the NFF boss citing his many failings following the arrival of Fifa president
The working visit of Fifa president Gianni Infantino to Nigeria has been overshadowed by a protest demanding the resignation of the Nigeria Football Federation president Amaju Pinnick over his illegal stay in office and incompetence on Sunday.

The protesters led by former Nigeria international Emeka Ezeogu besieged the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja following the arrival of the Fifa boss and his secretary general Fatma Samoura in Nigeria.  Fifa executive assistants Mattias Grafstrom and Veron Mosengo-Omba were also part of Infantino's entourage.

The Fifa President and his secretary general Samoura had landed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at about 4:30pm from the Fifa headquarters in Switzerland ahead of his two-day working visit to the country.

Infantino's visit is his first official appearance in Africa since he was elected as the new Fifa president on February 29 after he replaced Sepp Blatter.

The president and secretary general were immediately whisked away from the airport upon arrival and failed to speak to the media due to security report of a planned disruption.

Under his two-year watch, Pinnick saw the Super Eagles crumble to 70th position on the Fifa world ranking after failing to qualify the country to a second consecutive Africa Cup of Nations since winning the continental showpiece in 2013.

Earlier, the Falcons missed the Olympics for the second time in a row and owed both past and present coaches including late Stephen Keshi and Shaibu Amodu till date.

The Super Eagles are with no substantive coach three months to 2018 World Cup qualifier opener and the scandalous handling of Paul le Guen's hiring, seeing how the Frenchman reject the plum coaching job.

On Saturday, seven-time champions Flying Eagles failed to qualify for the U20 Africa Cup of Nations in Zambia next year. This means Nigeria and reigning U17 world record scorer Victor Oshimen will miss the upcoming U20 Fifa World Cup for the first since 1999.

At least 10 protesters including leader Ezeogu were found displaying placards outside the Transcorp Hilton Hotel during the arrival of the Fifa president, NFF and other FA presidents.

On the placards were written "Infantino - Nigerian football is in shambles", 'Amaju Must Go' and 'President Buhari Save Nigeria Football' among others.

The protest of Ezeogu is the second held this year since the Nigeria Sports Marketers Association had requested for the resignation of NFF president Amaju Pinnick over 'incompetence' during a meeting with the sports minister in April.

Many questions have continued to trail the crashing trend of Nigeria football, especially with national teams recent poor outing despite the improving men's topflight league and long list of springing talents around the world.

With the country's football obviously facing heavy structural defects and administrative crisis, football analysts and fans believe the wide-advertised visit of the Fifa president was wrongly time.

Most troubling of all is the financial burden of hosting the fifa president, secretary general, 17 African football association presidents alongside government officials in the country's football and economy's worse time.

Meanwhile, troubled Pinnick is hoping to use Infantino's visit to promote his fading acceptability as NFF president despite a Jos' court order asking him out of office at the expense of his challenger Chris Giwa since he assumed office on September 29, 2014.

However, millions of football fans are worried and amiss about what blessing the visit of the Fifa top officials will bring Nigeria seeing the dwindling fortune of the game in the country.

CYCLING: Chris Froome celebrates Tour de France victory with beer and champagne as Team Sky star eases to third title in Paris

Chris Froome's coronation as a three-time Tour de France winner saw the Team Sky star enjoy a celebratory glass of champagne on his way to Paris on Sunday.

The British cyclist enjoyed a procession on the way into the capital, shaking hands with his rivals and even having time for some bubbly passed to him by a support car.

Froome's victory - his third Tour de France success - comes following the ceremonial last stage where he was given a facile final stage ride into the Champs-Elysees.
Going into the last stage of this year's Tour, only a major disaster would have stopped Froome, 31, from celebrating more glory. But no such concerns arose for the Kenyan-born superstar, who eased to victory in the most comfortable of fashions.

Andre Greipel was the winner of the final stage for the second consecutive year but all eyes were on Froome rather than the 34-year-old German.

It means he joins an exclusive club of three-time winners of cycling's most famous and grueling race that currently includes Greg LeMond, Louison Bobet and Philippe Thys among its members.

Froome's victory also saw him become the first back-to-back winner since Indurain, who claimed victory in both 1994 and 1995.

With their main man once again victorious in France, Team Sky seemed determined to enjoy Froome's success, linking arms with the man in the yellow jersey on their way into the capital.

Team-mates Geraint Thomas and Luke Rowe - two Welshman who are key members of Team Sky - also found time for a drink with Froome, soaking each other in beer at the start of the last stage - the 113km journey into Paris.

'To my team-mates and support team - this is your yellow jersey too,' an exhausted Froome said on the podium in Paris.

'I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for your sacrifice. This is one special team and I'm proud to be a part of it. My son, Kellan, I dedicate this victory to you.

'This Tour has obviously taken place against the backdrop of terrible events in Nice and we pay tribute to those who have lost their lives.

'These events put sport into perspective but it also shows the value of sport to free society.

'We all love the Tour because it is unpredictable but we love the Tour more for what stays the same - the passion from fans, the French countryside and the bond created by sport.

'These things will never change.
Froome's success in France this summer has been anything but straightforward.

He was forced to run up Mont Vertoux - the toughest stage of the Tour - after crashing while he also came off his bike on stage 19 from Albertville.

The defending champion was overtaken by rivals Adam Yates and Nairo Quintana in the first of those melees but has proven his class to secure big race glory once again.

In the process, he has also secured his status as one of British cycling's all-time greats and with a number of years left in his legs yet, further titles remain a more than real possibility

FOOTBALL TRANSFER: Paul Pogba closing in on Manchester United return as Juventus star and agent hold talks to finalise details of £110m transfer

Manchester United will look to finalise a world record £110million transfer of Paul Pogba from Juventus this week.

Talks are at a critical stage after Pogba's agent Mino Raiola flew to Miami to meet with his client and discuss the finer details.

On Saturday, Juventus agreed to pay Napoli £78m for striker Gonzalo Higuain and there is a general acceptance from the Italians that, if United agree to pay the 20 per cent bonus due to Raiola and Pogba, which represents an additional £18.4m, they will allow the 23-year-old to return to Old Trafford.

The eye-watering figures have drawn criticism from former United favourite Paul Scholes who says Pogba simply isn't worth the money.

'For that sort of money, you want someone who is going to score 50 goals a season like Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi. Pogba is nowhere worth that kind of money yet,' said Scholes.

Speaking to Sport Witness, he referred to United's opening offer of £86m adding: 'Okay, he has gone on to great things. I think certainly there has been a lot of improvement. He needed to improve if he is going to be a player worth £86m.

United legend Paul Scholes (centre) believes his former club shouldn't pay that much for Pogba's services

'He was a very talented young player, I played with him and I knew how good he was. He played for the first team maybe once or twice, but from my understanding he was asking for too much money.

'For his age, he was asking for far too much money, that too for a player who hadn't played first team football.'

Despite Scholes' reservations, United plan to agree Pogba's transfer before the end of the week. Real Madrid made a late enquiry but are reluctant to match a financial package that will see the player earn up to £290,000 a week with bonuses.

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri, confirmed: 'Pogba is a Juventus player at the moment but we don't know what is going to happen. The club are looking after negotiations

Olympics; Russia allowed to compete at Rio Olympics after IOC's shock decision not to issue blanket ban following doping revelations

Russia will be allowed to compete at next month's Rio Olympics after the event's governing body made the shock decision not to issue a blanket ban on Russian competitors.

The shock decision - made after a meeting of the IOC's executive board on Sunday - comes despite Richard McLaren's sensational, damning report into their state-sponsored doping programme.

The IOC announced that Russian athletes will be able to take part in the Games should they fulfil a strict set of criteria, while no one who has been sanctioned for any doping offences in the past will be allowed to compete.

The outcome of the executive board's deliberations comes as a surprise following the results of McLaren's investigation, which painted a picture of widespread doping by Russians across a range of sports, including at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

The IOC labelled the findings 'a shocking and unprecedented attack on the integrity of sports and on the Olympics' earlier this week, and it was expected that the entire Russian team - from across all 28 sports involved in the summer spectacle - would be prevented from competing.

However, the governing body stressed their desire to 'protect clean athletes and the integrity of sport' as they left the door ajar for Russia to feature prominently at the Games, which are due to run from August 5 until August 21.

Just hours after the IOC's statement, all seven Russian tennis players were cleared to compete at the Rio Olympics, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) said on Sunday.

'The seven Russian tennis players who have been nominated to compete in Rio have been subject to a rigorous anti-doping testing programme outside Russia,' the ITF said in a statement.

'The ITF believes that this is sufficient for the seven Russian tennis players to meet the relevant requirement of today's decision of the IOC Executive Board.'

However, the head of the United States Anti-Doping Agency slammed the IOC following the announcement of a non-blanket ban.

Travis Tygart said the committee 'refused to take decisive leadership' and has 'left a confusing mess', as 27 sports federations find themselves facing a 12-day race to establish which Russian athletes are eligible to compete in Rio

FOOTBALL-Lionel Messi shows off new haircut as he gears up for the new La Liga season after a tough summer

Lionel Messi hasn't enjoyed the best of summers. He was part of the Argentina side that lost in the Copa America final for the second consecutive year while Cristiano Ronaldo won Euro 2016 with Portugal - and now he's plumped for a quite loud haircut.

The Barcelona star's new look was revealed by his wife Antonella on her Instagram page and unsurprisingly the reaction was mixed.

Rather than stick with his natural hair colour of brown, as he has done for the majority of his decorated career, the 29-year-old decided to bleach his hair blonde.
Antonella used the caption '#blondeboy' yet she probably didn't expect such a high number of his adorning fans who certainly weren't as impressed as she was.

The common comparison to made was with Arsenal and Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey who sported a similar hairstyle at Euro 2016. Others likened him more to Manchester United's Phil Jones or Manchester City's Samir Nasri.

Messi has been on holiday with his family after being granted extended leave by Barcelona following the Copa America in the United States.

It proved to be a difficult tournament for him as he reached the final with Argentina only to lose to Chile 4-2 on penalties. He announced his international retirement following that defeat.

He was supposed to remain on holiday until the start of August in order for him to get as much rest as possible ahead of the new campaign but he will travel with his club team-mates to England this week.

Barcelona manager Luis Enrique has named Messi in his 25-man travelling squad that will take part in a training camp at St George's Park, the FA's national football centre.

He could also feature in their pre-season friendly against Liverpool at Wembley on August 6.

BOXING: EIGHT-FIGHT NOVICE WINS IBF ELIMINATOR

Eight-fight novice Sergiy Derevyanchenko smashed former IBF middleweight champion Sam Soliman to defeat inside two rounds in an IBF middleweight title eliminator at the Foxwoods Resort in Mashantucket, Connecticut, on Thursday night.
The 30-year-old Derevyanchenko was just too big and strong for the 42-year-old veteran Soliman who was dropped in the first round and twice in the second round before the referee waved the fight off.
Derevyanchenko dominated from the opening bell and caught Soliman with some stinging blows before he sent him down with a combination of punches as he came off the ropes.
However, Soliman managed to tie up the Russian to hold on until the bell.
In round two Derevyanchenko continued to dominate and knocked the Australian down with a flurry of punches.
He manged to beat the count but soon afterwards a big right-left combination sent Soliman through the ropes as the referee immediately stepped in to stop the fight.
Soliman was down on the canvas for several minutes after the end of the fight.
Derevyanchenko improved his record to 9-0; 7 and Soloman’s record dropped to 44-14; 18.
On the undercard in a middleweight bout Ievgen Khytrov 14-0; 12 dominated Paul Mendez 19-3-2; 9 before stopping him in the ninth round.

FOOTBALL: MATCH VIDEO HIGHLIGHT CHELSEA 3 - 0 AC WOLFSBERGER (PRE-SEASON FRIENDLY 2016)

Wednesday’s friendly proved straightforward enough for the Blues to navigate, as they bounced back from Saturday’s loss to Rapid Vienna
Bertrand Traore, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Nathaniel Chalobah struck in Chelsea’s clash with Wolfsberger AC on Wednesday to hand them a 3-0 win.
The result ensured Antonio Conte oversaw his first victory in charge of the Blues, with new arrival Michy Batshuayi playing his first game, following 2-0 defeat to Rapid Vienna last time out.
The Italian started the likes of Diego Costa and Oscar but had to wait until the 41st minute before his side opened the scoring, Traore bundling home a scrappy goal.
A host of changes at half-time saw Chelsea lose some fluency and they had to rely on a late flurry of goals, as Loftus-Cheek and Chalobah struck to seal victory.

TENNIS: JOHANNA KONTA REACHES BANK OF THE WEST CLASSIC SEMI-FINALS

Johanna Konta hit back from the loss of the second set to beat Saisai Zheng in the quarter-finals of the Bank of the West Classic on Friday.
The British No 1 was made to battle hard before securing a 6-2 4-6 6-3 victory over her Chinese opponent in Stanford, California.
The third seed started strongly and broke her opponent twice in the opening set but Zheng levelled in a scrappy second set which saw serve broken seven times.

Konta broke early in the third before Zheng rallied with three straight games, but another break saw the Briton move into a 4-3 lead.
She held serve before breaking Zheng for a third time and then held on to secure victory in just over two hours 20 minutes.
In the semi-final, she will face second seed Dominika Cibulkova after the Slovakian rallied from 2-5 down in the opener to win 11 straight games en route to a 7-5 6-0 victory over Japanese fifth seed Misaki Doi.
Top seed Venus Williams, winner of the tournament in 2000 and 2002, beat 17-year-old wild card CiCi Bellis 6-4 6-1 to set up a last-four meeting with fellow American Alison Riske, who was leading 6-3, 0-1 when fourth-seeded Coco Vandeweghe retired from their quarter-final with an ankle injury.

FORMULA 1: NICO ROSBERG KEEPS POLE POSITION AFTER STEWARD INVESTIGATION

Nico Rosberg has kept his Hungarian GP pole position after surviving an investigation into his controversial lap at the end of Q3 in Budapest.

After studying data of the incident, in which Rosberg passed double-yellow flags after McLaren's Fernando Alonso spun out, the stewards accepted telemetry from the German's Mercedes car 'demonstrated that the driver reduced speed significantly'.
Lewis Hamilton, Rosberg's team-mate and closest title rival, will start Sunday's race alongside the world championship leader on the front row.
Hamilton had to abandon his final flying lap after encountering Alonso's stricken McLaren while Rosberg set the fastest time of any driver during the second sector of the Hungaroring circuit in which the Spaniard had made his mistake.
"For sure there was double waved [yellows], but I had a very big lift and lost a lot of time as a result. I'm sure that'll be ok," said Rosberg.
"I acted according to what you need to do and so I showed a big lift and slowed down. I was slower in that yellow sector than on my previous fast lap, so I'm quite sure that it'll be ok," he later told Sky F1's Rachel Brookes.

But on being told that Rosberg set the fastest time in the middle sector during his pole lap, a visibly-surprised Hamilton responded: "He went purple through the sector? Wow, that is a surprise."
However, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff insisted he didn't believe an investigation was warranted.
"He had a big lift into the yellow zone. It should be ok as per our data," Wolff told Sky F1.
After watching footage from Rosberg's Mercedes of the incident, Sky F1's Martin Brundle commented: "He definitely slowed through that left hander more than normal. That's a savvy pole position."
But Red Bull boss Christian Horner seemed less convinced, remarking: "It's down to the stewards to decide - Rosberg was behind Daniel and managed to get a purple middle sector."
Speaking several hours after the end of qualifying, Hamilton said it would benefit everyone if the FIA moved to clarify by how much drivers needed to slow for yellow flags.
"It needs to clarified now," he said. "For all us drivers, we need to fully understand the yellow flag situation. The way that it's written is not potentially how it's interpreted by the stewards or the drivers. More clarification would be good.
"For me, there was no question, I had to lift because Fernando was on the track. But perhaps for Nico, I think Fernando had cleared [out the way], but there were still flags. So it was just a different scenario."
Hamilton added: "The clarification that's needed is, Nico only lost a tenth through the corner, so if that's what really what we are allowed to do in future? Even though you lift and approach the corner with due care, if that's allowed on a double yellow... I thought maybe that's the case on a single yellow, but maybe on a double I thought you had to pay more caution to it.

''So if it's only a tenth you have to lose that's now different for us all drivers, we can potentially approach it differently. But I'm not sure that's the safest approach."
Earlier this season Force India's Nico Hulkenberg avoided any action from the stewards in a similar situation.
In qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix, Hulkenberg was investigated for failing to slow down under yellow flags when Carlos Sainz left the track following an engine blow out.
On that occasion, the stewards ruled: 'Although the driver went 'green' [setting a personal best time] in the sector where the double yellow flags were displayed, the telemetry clearly demonstrated he had decelerated on approaching the flag point and that his speed reduced in the yellow flag sector.'
